sedan chair:

Sedan chairThe sedan chair was both a fashionable and a discreet way for a single person to get around London or Bath. A gentleman paying a visit to a woman could be delivered directly inside the house, safe from prying eyes. Some people owned their own chairs and employed their own servants or hired chairmen for the occasion, but most people simply engaged the conveyance as needed. At one time up to 60 sedan chairs were licensed to operate in Bath. Over time, however, the sedan chair was superseded by the wheeled Bath chair and then by hackney carriages and hansom cabs. There’s a nice “reprinted” article here about sedan chairs.
