Read the rest of this entry tutorial

Insert MoreMany bloggers fail to use the “Read the rest of this entry” feature that’s found in both WordPress and blogger, with the result that the home page of most blogs is really, really long and it can difficult to tell where one entry ends and the next begins. And if a blog visitor has a slow connection and there are lots of pictures in each entry, displaying the entire home page can take quite a while.

I prefer to display the first paragraph and maybe the first graphic on the home page and let the reader click the “Read more” button. In WordPress, you can achieve this by pressing the Insert More Tag button and in blogger pressing the Insert jump break button.

Of course, these buttons are only visible in the WordPress Visual Editor or the blogger Compose editor. If you’re using the HTML editor in either WordPress or blogger, you’ll need to type in the following HTML code where you want the break to occur: <!--more-->

If you then switch back to the Visual or Compose editor, you’ll see a graphic that represents the break. A visitor to your blog will see on the home page either “Read the rest of this entry »” or “Read more »”
