What I’m reading: Death Comes to Pemberley
OK, it comes as a surprise to no one that I should be reading Death Comes to Pemberley, which I am quite enjoying in contrast to some ho-hum comments and reviews about P.D. James’ continuation of Pride and Prejudice.
I certainly haven’t felt she has taken liberties with P&P, and in fact I’m happy so far to let the story stand on its own, probably because Lady James (I think that is the right form for she is Baroness James of Holland Park) really doesn’t make an effort to write like Jane Austen or follow the conventions of Austen. My sister-in-law, who is a fan of Lady James’ mysteries, did not much care for Death Comes to Pemberley, and I’ve also noticed a tepid reception from some Janeites.
I will, of course, offer a full review when I’ve finished.
