Mudlarks still exist in present-day London

On the heels of my previous post about dirty jobs, I found another article in the current issue of Smithsonian Magazine (Let the Good Thames Roll, July-August 2012) that mentioned that mudlarks still search the Thames at low tide for both history and profit. In fact, there’s even a History Channel UK series called Mud Men about these modern day mudlarks and what they find.

In general, I decry these sort of shows on the U.S. History Channel—Hillbilly Hand Fishing Alaska State Troopers Pawnshop Antique Dealers—because I still prefer real documentaries with sonorous narrators telling me about the Black Death or the Little Ice Age or continental drift or the fall of Rome.

But if the Smithsonian is going to mention the series, I will take notice and besides, anything done with a British accent, even if it’s not posh, appeals to me.
