Smithsonian Journeys Downton Abbey themed excursion

Highclere Castle

If you’ve got a spare $6,995, think about taking a trip with Smithsonian Journeys May 4—12, 2013, and visit many of the filming locations of Downton Abbey, which includes Highclere Castle (the Downton stand-in) and the village of Bampton, the Cotswold town used for many of the outdoor scenes.

I’ve never been rich enough to afford an organized, group trip, although if ever my husband and I go to Egypt, it will probably be with an organization such as the Smithsonian. I’ve always figured I could do England on my own. This trip does sound fantastic, however, as you’ll be accompanied by Carol Wallace, whose book To Marry an English Lord (according to the Smithsonian) helped inspire the PBS/ITV series.

You’ll also meet Jessica Fellowes, who wrote the companion book to the series, and also be joined by Smithsonian Blue Badge Guide Rosalind Hutchinson. Apparently you’ll be staying at Tylney Hall, which like Highclere, is in Jane Austen country in Hampshire.
