A work in progress
My Particular Friend is a work in progress and marks a departure for me in my efforts to be published. Even though several agents found my previous novel very good, it remains unpublished because those agents thought it would be difficult to publish a first novel.
So I have decided to forgo the cycle of writing a book (which I have always found enjoyable) and then finding my hopes crushed that it will never be published (not enjoyable) and instead publish the thing myself, while writing it. It is hardly a new concept and several book blogs have had success and eventual publishers. This book will differ in that I will never actively seek a publisher.
As a work in progress, I would ask your forebearance in asking questions from time to time to help me hone details (and I do fully realize I am mostly talking to myself). For instance, do you think it reasonable for me to think that the “season” in Bath is wildly open to interpretation and is different from the London season? I choose to think that my book’s season includes the fall of 1803 or 1804. For reasons that may or may not become obvious later, it takes place before the death of Nelson. At the moment the actual month is not important, I only need to know if it is cold or rainy to provide atmosphere for the setting.
I hope to clarify the matter when I visit Bath next year, but until then, if you have any particular knowledge of the Bath social season, I would very much like to hear it.
