Edward Hardwicke obituary
It’s hard to take that Edward Hardwicke, who played Watson to Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes, has died. There is a nice obituary here at the The Telegraph.
Hardwicke, of course, succeeded David Burke in the role after Burke’s two seasons as Holmes’ chronicler. Both actors portrayed Watson as the intelligent, loyal friend Conan Doyle originally created, rather than as the bumbling but endearing friend portrayed by Nigel Bruce alongside Basil Rathbone as Holmes. Hardwicke was 78.
