Jane Austen in space!
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a eligible Vulcan male must be in want of a relationship every seven years, but what is not generally acknowledged is that the rest of the time he is free to do as he chooses.
No, that line does not actually open Personal Log: The Adventures of Choleth T’Vrel. But the story does combine Jane Austen, Horatio Hornblower and Star Trek and is something I’ve been working on in my spare time for a few years. It is the story of a newly minted ensign who finds herself on the USS ShirKahr at the beginning of the Dominion War. The ShirKahr is a ship principally crewed by Vulcans and with a Vulcan mother and a human father, she is leery of being thrown into Vulcan society.
You must be saying to yourself “Wow, what a great idea!” or “Oh my God, Jane Austen in space! How could you?” But as I think I’ve explained here, Star Trek is my first love, and only recently have I fallen in love with the works of Jane Austen. What more natural than that I should want to join these disparate worlds? Add the Dominion War standing in for the Napoleonic Wars and Lieutenant Solest a substitute for Fitzwilliam Darcy and I get Pride and Prejudice and Mr. Midshipman Hornblower in one book!
I know, I wouldn’t believe it either.
